Q: What digital relief model file format should I choose?
A: We offer digital relief model files which are intended for CNC machining. The file type you choose must be compatible with the software you are using. Typical compatibility offerings are for use with the CarveWright CNC System software (ptn), and/or Vectric Aspire (3dClip) and/or any other Software products that can utilize generic standard STL format digital relief model files (such as Delcam/ArtCAM and VCarve Pro 8 or above).
Each model page will display which file formats are available for that item. You can choose the specific file format you need to download, according to what software you are using. If you see an item that is not in the file format you require, please contact us to let us know. Whenever possible, we will do our best to create a compatible model file format for you.
To summarize, here is a list of the digital relief model file types offered and what software you can use them with. This is not a complete list, since STL models can be used in many different software packages, but this should help you choose a suitable file type for your particular application.
.ptn – for use with CarveWright Designer (can also use .stl if you own the CarveWright STL Importer)
.3dClip and .stl – for use with Vectric Aspire
.stl – for use with any other modeling and/or CNC software that can import STL models. Examples are ArtCAM, Alphacam, Cut3D, ShopBot Partworks 3D, Rhino3D, Slicer, STL Importer, Sculptor, MeshLab, MillWizard, ZBrush, Gemvision, Matrix, EnRoute, DeskProto, MasterCam, VCarve Pro 8 (or above) and many others.
Q: What Project file format can I use?
A: Our DIY Project files are complete software-specific layouts compatible with either CarveWright software or Vectric Software (including projects that will work with VCarve Pro ShopBot Edition or ShopBot Partworks 2D software which are also made by Vectric). Please read the Project description to be sure you are using compatible software (including the appropriate software versions) prior to purchasing a Project. For example, a Project might be compatible for a particular software product but not others. Each project will specify what software product(s) it is compatible with. Every CarveBuddy Project includes detailed step-by-step photo documented instructions in PDF form to guide you through the entire project; from the initial setup through assembling and finishing. File format conversion requests do not apply to Projects – we are unable to provide file conversions for the DIY Projects because the project files and step-by-step instructions are created exclusively for CarveWright (mpc) and/or Vectric-based software (crv3d and/or crv).

Q: What payment methods can I use?
A: Accepted Payment Methods are Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express and PayPal. We use PayPal Pro Business to process all online transaction payments. You do not need to have a PayPal account, but can use that if you wish.

If you already have an existing PayPal account, you may log in and use your PayPal account for payment during the checkout process. PayPal provides world-class security for buyers and uses the latest anti-fraud and data encryption technology to assure your transaction is as secure and safe as possible. All of your information is protected by SSL, which ensures that your information is encrypted and can’t be stolen when it’s sent across the internet.
Q: When can I expect to receive my purchase?
A: All items are digital file downloads. As soon as your payment has been approved you can download your purchase immediately. You will also be sent an email receipt with instructions on how to download your purchase at a later time, if you wish.
If you don’t receive an email within a reasonable time (normally within a few minutes), please check your spam or junk mail folder. If you still find you have not received an email please contact us
Q: How many times can I download my purchase?
A: You can download your purchases up to three times within 365 days of your initial purchase date. We believe this is more than ample for all users. Keep in mind if you have used all three download opportunities within that period of time, the files must be re-purchased to download them after that.
It is very important for you to create backup copies of your important computer files, preferably on a regularly scheduled basis. This includes backing up any digital file purchases you have made from CarveBuddy. We cannot be responsible for file loss due to hard drive failures or storage media failures at your end. If you have properly backed up your files, this will not be a problem for you. Please exercise normal precautionary measures for ALL your important files by creating safe backups. Hard drives and storage media will likely fail eventually – and at the most unexpected times. Cloud backup services are an excellent choice for file backup protection in addition to your own physical backup media.
Q: The files are in .zip format (“.zip” filename extension). How do I “unzip” and use the files?
A: The digital files you purchase and download are ‘zipped’ (compressed) so that download times are minimized and because some internet servers will not accept certain filename extensions for digital model files. Model, pattern and project files are required to be ‘zipped’ to assure downloads will proceed as normal for any email server. This is consistent with industry standard computer file transfer procedures since 1986.
You must ‘unzip’ the files after you download them, so your files are uncompressed and made ready for whatever software you will be using them with. (You should not attempt to directly open ‘zipped’ files – that usually won’t work.) Most computers and operating systems already come with an unzip utility that allows you to easily unzip your files. Sometimes the files will be unzipped for you automatically, but may need to be unzipped manually (right-click on the zipped file filename and it will most likely show the option to “extract here” to unzip your file in the same folder where you downloaded the file in the first place). Select “extract” and the file will be unzipped (uncompressed) and ready for use in your software.
Q: I tried to open a digital model file and got an error message. Why?
A: Do not double-click a digital model file or otherwise to try to open it on it’s own – your operating system may not have the correct program associated with the file type and you’ll (rightfully) receive an error message. Normally, the modeling or CNC software you use must be started prior to using a digital model file. Most software programs do not open the digital model files directly either – rather, you import them into your software. The actual procedure varies, depending upon your particular compatible software product. Refer to your software’s Help File or contact your software company’s Tech Support if you need specific instructions on how to import digital models into your particular software.
Q: I purchased the wrong file type, what do I do?
A: If this has happened to you, please contact us immediately and include the following information so we can verify your purchase and help sort things out for you:

- Email address that you used for your purchase
- Your order number
- The file type you intended to purchase
Q: What software support do you offer?
A: We do not offer direct technical support for your software. That responsibility is between you and your software manufacturer. However, it is possible we can help with general questions regarding the use of our digital models. Please contact us if you need general assistance.
Q: What can and can’t I do with the patterns, models and projects I purchase?
